  7.     Even rarer than a great opera singer is a great opera
  8. feud. But aficionados of such backstage backbiting are now being
  9. treated to a full 15 rounds between two world-class tenors, Jose
  10. Carreras and Alfredo Kraus. As artistic director for the Summer
  11. Olympics, Barcelona-born Carreras has organized a huge
  12. lip-synced ceremony starring Spanish opera greats. Conspicuous
  13. among the uninvited: Canary Islander Kraus, whose supporters say
  14. he was snubbed by Carreras out of professional jealousy.
  15. Carreras insists he is honoring Kraus' ridicule of the similarly
  16. massive, miked -- and Kraus-less -- operatic extravaganza that
  17. closed the 1990 soccer championships in Rome. The Spanish
  18. Minister of Culture has offered to intervene. There are
  19. currently no plans to send in U.N. peacekeeping troops.
